Mille Miglia Diary
Sunday, June 18 - Coda
By Stefan Gavell
After receiving our medals and watching part of the awards ceremony, we treat ourselves to a nice dinner and get to bed at a decent hour. I am more exhausted than I have ever been in my life. On Sunday I drive the 1900 back to Bassano, about 120 km from Brescia. I’m listening to the opera on the radio, but only hear the high notes due to the engine noise. After a lovely lunch with Francesco and his family at a country trattoria, we decide to take a quick tour of the surrounding hills in our respective classic cars: a Giulietta TI Berlina, a Giulia Super, and my car. The 1900 refuses to start. We change the coil. Still nothing, then suddenly it springs to life. Perhaps after almost 2200 kilometers she is saying that she, like me needs a rest too. Organizing all the papers, road books and maps after the event, I come across the missing paper that gives the official starting time for each leg.
