IN YET ANOTHER RENDITION OF THE FALL BERKSHIRES SORTIE, event organizer Peter Walker is planning a spirited fun frolic through the hills of western Massachusetts. This year, the outing will take place on Saturday, September 18 — weather permitting (the first rain date will be Saturday, September 25; Sunday, September 26 will be the alternative rain date).

Alfa Heaven

In this second pandemic year, things will continue to be different from in previous years. Our gathering place this year will be Sweet Lucy's Bakeshop at 7 South Street in Bernardston, MA (for directions, see below or click the Map & Directions button; this is next door to the now-closed Four Leaf Clover Restaurant, where we gathered in September, 2020).

Plan to be at Sweet Lucy's by 10:30AM, because we're going to shove off promptly at 11:00, and finding us will be difficult after that.

Coffee, other drinks, and all kinds of delicious baked goods are available at Sweet Lucy's. There are outdoor picnic tables and lounge chairs, as well (and an indoor restroom), so feel free to arrive earlier, so that you can indulge in carburation for humans.

From there, we'll head out on our romp in the countryside. Peter is promising us another interesting, scenic, traffic-free, twisty route through a beautiful part of New England.

After a couple of hours of back-road bliss, we'll pause for lunch. Due to the Delta variant and continued covid-19 concerns, lunch this year will again take place at the Walker family house at 534 Hawley Road in Ashfield, MA. There is enough lawn space there for everyone to be able to spread out and observe social distancing. Bring your own picnic lunch and lawn furniture as well as masks and your favorite hand-cleaning anti-bacterial goop.

Because good weather will be necessary for the success of the bring-your-own picnic, we will re-schedule to the next rain date at the slightest sign of a pessimistic forecast.

The final call about the weather and whether to run on the 18th or postpone to the following weekend will be posted by email on the morning of Thursday, September 16.

If you're coming on the tour, please contact Peter before Thursday evening, September 16, at or 978-524-8102. Meg's cell phone (if she gets a signal) is 978-578-4384. Peter's (even less likely to get a signal) is 978-335-1673.

Lodging: In past years, some Sortie attendees have taken advantage of local inns to spend the previous and/or following nights in the area, and we usually make available a list of B&Bs and motels/hotels in the area. If you are interested in finding lodging, consult the announcement for the 2019 Sortie or contact Peter for it.

Everyone who's been on one of our Sorties knows what a great time it is, and what a great way to give your Alfa a good fling. (See last year's event.) Don't miss it!Tiny Quadrifoglio

Sweet Lucy's Bakeshop is located at 7 South Street in Bernardston, MA (phone: 413-648-3160). Take exit 50B (old exit 28B) from I-91 for Bernardston and Mass. Route 10 west. Go about half a mile on Route 10 west to the stop sign and 'T' with US Route 5. Turn left. Go less than a tenth of a mile and enter the parking lot on the right of Sweet Lucy's Bakeshop.

A Sunoco gas station (with a Dunkin' Donuts) at 50 Church Street is on the north side of route 10, about half way between the interstate exit and the stop sign at the intersection with route 5. This will be the only place on the tour to fill gas tanks.

Right before the Sunoco station, on Saturday mornings starting at 10, is the Bernardston farmers' market, in case you want to search for picnic goodies there.
