The view from our post-Sortie picnic location
Saturday, September 19th
The Sortie is ON for the 19th!
IN YET ANOTHER RENDITION OF THE FALL BERKSHIRES SORTIE, event organizer Peter Walker is planning a spirited fun frolic through the hills of western Massachusetts. This year, the outing will take place on Saturday, September 19 — weather permitting (the first rain date will be Sunday, September 20; September 26 and 27 will be the alternative rain dates).
In this pandemic year, things will have to be a little different from in previous years. We will meet at the Four Leaf Clover Restaurant, at 19 South Street in Bernardston, MA (directions below or click the Map & Directions button). If you need gas, get it just after you get off I-91 (see below).
Plan to be there at 10:30AM, because we're going to shove off promptly at 11:00, and finding us will be difficult after that. People who want to have breakfast at the Four Leaf Clover should arrive, if possible, between 9 and 9:30.
From there, we'll head out on our romp in the countryside. Peter is promising us another interesting, scenic, traffic-free, twisty route through a very beautiful part of New England. After a couple of hours of back-road bliss, we'll pause for lunch. Lunch this year will not take place at a restaurant but will follow the model of George Dolak's July AONE get-together in New Hampshire. We will complete the tour at the Walker family house at 534 Hawley Road in Ashfield, MA.
There is enough lawn space there for everyone to be able to spread out and observe social distancing guidelines. Bring your own picnic lunch and lawn furniture as well as masks and your favorite hand-cleaning anti-bacterial goop.
Because good weather will be necessary for the success of the bring-your-own picnic, we will re-schedule to the next rain date at the slightest sign of a pessimistic forecast.
The final call about the weather and whether to run on the 19th or postpone will be posted by email on the morning of Thursday, September 17. The Sortie is ON!
If you're coming on the tour, please contact Peter before Thursday evening, September 17, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 978-524-8102. Meg's cell phone (if she gets a signal) is 978-578-4384. Peter's (even less likely to get a signal) is 978-335-1673.
Lodging: In past years, some Sortie attendees have taken advantage of local inns to spend the previous and/or following nights in the area, and we usually make available a list of B&Bs and motels/hotels in the area. Because of the epidemic, we do not know which ones will be open for business. Consult the announcement for last year's Sortie or contact Peter for it, in case you wish to look into who might be providing lodging.
Everyone who's been on one of our Sorties knows what a great time it is, and what a great way to give your Alfa a good fling. (See last year's event.) Don't miss it!
The Four Leaf Clover Restaurant is located at 19 South Street in Bernardston, MA (phone: 413-648-9514). Take exit 28B from I-91 for Mass. Route 10 west. Go about half a mile on Route 10 west to the stop sign and 'T' with US Route 5. Turn left. Go one tenth of a mile and enter the parking lot of the Four Leaf Clover Restaurant, on the right.
There is a gas station on the north side of route 10, about half way between the interstate and the stop sign. This will be the only place on the tour to fill gas tanks.
